Zhonglong Bridge is the middle of the three bridges on the Dragon River spanning Jingting Port of Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, and represents the dragon’s body in this symbolic formation. Built in the mid-to-late Qing dynasty, the bridge has stood for over a century. It is a single-span beam bridge constructed entirely of granite, including its piers and body.
The bridge measures 14 meters in length, with abutments approximately 2.2 meters wide and a deck width of about 1.5 meters. The arch has a span of 4 meters. Each side of the bridge has 12 stone steps leading up to the deck. The solid granite railings serve both as protective barriers and seating for rest, standing 50 cm high, with pillar posts reaching 86 cm. The railings are plain and unadorned. At each corner, drum-shaped posts enhance the structure.
Zhonglong Bridge is regarded as the “belly” of the Dragon River. According to legend, over 300 years ago, Emperor Kangxi once walked across this very bridge, leading later generations to nickname it the “Dragon Bridge.” Because it lies in the middle stretch of the river, it became known as “Zhonglong Bridge” (Middle Dragon Bridge).
With its elegant design and enduring construction—massive stones skillfully stacked to form its piers—the bridge remains remarkably sturdy. Today, it is considered a jewel among the ancient town’s bridges. Visitors throng across its surface, while boats glide beneath, and the banks, lined with willows and blossoming flowers, create a uniquely picturesque Jiangnan-style water town scene.
